Top 5 Career Opportunities after Cybersecurity Degree Course /blog/top-careers-after-cybersecurity-degree-course/ /blog/top-careers-after-cybersecurity-degree-course/#respond Mon, 12 Jun 2023 04:00:00 +0000 /blog/?p=4107 A damaged lock on a circuit board.

A cybersecurity course is an excellent option if you are a student looking to embark on a rewarding and in-demand career path. Not only does the field offer a wide range of job opportunities and competitive salaries, but it also provides the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on society by helping to secure our digital infrastructure and protect against cyber threats.

In this article, we will explore why students should consider a cybersecurity course, such as the increasing demand for skilled professionals, the educational pathways available and the exciting job opportunities.

What is Cybersecurity and why is it in demand?

Firstly, let’s explore what cybersecurity means. Cybersecurity is the protection of systems, networks and programmes from cyber-attacks. It is a practice used by companies to defend themselves from phishing schemes, ransomware attacks and data breaches.

These digital attacks are typically executed to access, alter or destroy sensitive information. Other motives could be to extort users’ money or interrupt routine business procedures.

Cybersecurity has become an increasingly critical field in the rapidly evolving technological landscape. As we continue to rely increasingly on digital technologies to carry out our daily activities, we are exposed to an ever-growing number of cyber threats. From identity theft and ransomware attacks to nation-state hacking and cyber espionage, these threats pose a serious risk to our personal privacy, financial security, and national security.

As a result, the demand for cybersecurity professionals has soared in recent years, with companies and governments seeking skilled individuals to protect their networks, systems and data.

According to , the number of cybersecurity job listings increased from 629 in 2018 Q1 to 4162 in 2021 Q1, being one of the most sought-after roles in Singapore. This growth is driven by various factors, including the increasing sophistication of cyber-attacks, the proliferation of internet-connected devices, and the growing cybersecurity measures.

How Cybersecurity Courses Can Land You Your Dream Career

The cyber security field – like many others, requires prerequisite knowledge and experience. Therefore, pursuing a cybersecurity course or qualification would be your best bet at landing your desired career.

Back in 2022, Josephine Teo, Minister-in-charge of Cyber Security Agency, granting up to S$90,000 of initiatives to bolster the development of talents to combat cyber-attacks. This was done as part of the efforts to increase training and cybersecurity job opportunities.

Whether you are a fresh graduate, a mid-career professional looking for a job switch, or an IT professional looking to upskill yourself, there are relevant certifications to improve your knowledge of cybersecurity concepts and technicalities.

1)         GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC)

Suppose you are a mid-career professional with ambitions to switch jobs or a fresh graduate. In that case, you can look at the GSEC to learn valuable skills that put foundational terminologies and concepts to the test.

You will cover areas such as active defence, cryptography and cloud security, qualifying you as a competent cybersecurity employee. Layering this certification with an IT qualification from a local polytechnic or university can also increase the possibility of you landing your ideal cybersecurity job after graduation.

2)         CompTIA Security+

This course is similar to the GSEC and provides candidates with hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving skills that can even help you secure an intermediate-level cyber security job.

However, if you are new to IT, take up the Google IT Support Professional Certificate to gain some skills first.

3)         EC-Council Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH)

For professionals looking to consider a specialised route in cyber security, the CEH course trains candidates to rightfully hack into IT infrastructure and fix errors before any cyber-attacks. In addition, this certification will show employers you have specialised abilities in performing penetration testing, detecting attacks and implementing preventive measures.

However, you will minimally require two years of IT working experience to qualify for the CEH exam.

Like the courses above, plenty of other to upskill themselves. But before you do that, plan your career goals and decide which path will be best.

Scam Alert: Be Aware and Stay Vigilant /blog/scam-alert-be-aware-and-stay-vigilant/ /blog/scam-alert-be-aware-and-stay-vigilant/#respond Wed, 21 Sep 2022 06:40:41 +0000 /blog/?p=3952 Held on the afternoon of 16 September 2022, the talk presented by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China and the Singapore Police Force covered crucial topics related to scams, especially those that targeted students from China.

The topic of ā€œCommon Scam Typologies & Its Associated Risksā€ was covered by Mr Tan Song Hwee William from the OC Team of Singapore Police Force, whilst Mr Wu Jian Zi, First Secretary from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China shared more about ā€œTelecom Fraud Preventionā€ with the students in attendance.Ā Ā

Students sharing their experiences with Mr Wu Jian ZiĀ

One of the common scams is the China/Government Officials Impersonations Scam. The modus operandi is as such: scammers may use spoofed numbers to disguise real numbers and pretend that they are calling from organisations such as logistics companies or Immigration. They will proceed to request personal contact or bank details for verification purposes, which can then be used to forge fake official documents and arrest warrants to induce victims into believing they are involved in illegal activities. The scammers may also get them to hand over or collect fake documents and instruct the victims to report their movements daily and keep the “investigations” secret.

Scammers have tricked victims by falsely claiming that international students were kidnapped and used WeChat to extort ransom from parents of students in China.

In a news release by the police, that at least 231 victims have fallen for a variant of scams involving the impersonation of Chinese authorities since January 2022, with losses amounting to at least S$25 million. It is important to take note of these red flags:

  • The Chinese police, Interpol or any other overseas law enforcement agencies are not authorised to conduct any law enforcement operations in Singapore or request public assistance in conducting any form of investigation without permission of the Singapore government
  • Do not pick up phone calls that start with +65
  • Do not transfer money or provide one-time passwords
  • Reach out to close friends or family members to share your experience or to seek a second opinion
  • When in doubt, call the Embassy of the Republic of China or the Singapore Police Force to make enquiries and seek clarification

Make use of mobile apps like ScamShield to help block suspicious messages and calls.

Digital scams have tremendously spiked as the world becomes increasingly tech-savvy. It is important to be alert and be weary of online identities, links, and messages from strangers. Our students were able to take away important learning points and lessons to help them stay safe and protected from fraud.

Digitalisation: Are We Secure? /blog/digitalisation-are-we-secure/ /blog/digitalisation-are-we-secure/#respond Fri, 08 Oct 2021 09:39:54 +0000 /blog/?p=3026 No wonder the world is moving towards digitalisation at a very fast pace. We have smart phones, smart homes, small schools, smart malls, smart roads and smart cities. Undoubtedly, digitalization is improving our lifestyle; we are more civilized than before, but the question is: ā€œARE WE SECURE“?

Insecure IoT Devices

With the advancement of various hardware and software technologies, there are more and more IoT devices, which leads to an insecure environment. As millions of devices are connected, it creates a larger attack surface, which increases the opportunities for attackers. Both software and hardware attacks are increasing day by day. A single vulnerability can harm the entire network and also harm the society. There are many open source tools available for hackers and attackers. Even though many Anti-Forensics tools and techniques are available which help the intruder to protect themselves from future investigations. Even though the use of Anti Forensic tools and techniques is illegal, we need to ensure that the strict laws against the use of forensic tools are followed.

Vulnerable IoT Devices

Imagine a situation where there is a vulnerability in software used by millions of smartphone users. There are a number of reasons for vulnerabilities in IOT devices that make them insecure. They can be software, hardware or network vulnerabilities. There are also some other reasons for vulnerability in IoT devices. Some of them are listed below: –

  • Weak Password Protection
  • Lack of Patch Management
  • Insecure interfaces
  • Poor IoT Device Management
  • Lack of skilled personnel
  • Hardware malfunctions
  • Human ethical issues

Opportunities provided by Vulnerable Devices

These insecure devices allow cyber criminals to hijack (gain access to) the devices and launch further attacks on other systems. Example: After gaining access to a remote target system, the intruder next attempts to gather more network information, such as about other systems available on the network. To this end, the intruder may use the ‘nbtstat’ command to view the contents of the NetBIOS cache. In addition, the intruder can collect information about the network connections running to and from the victim system. To do this, the intruder can use the ‘netstat’ command. In this way, the intruder can hijack millions of devices through a single device and perform various attacks such as DoS and DDos attacks and also damage the entire network. There is no end to the malicious activities.

The more insecure devices, the more cyber-attacks.

Importance of Data/Information Security – A Biggest Asset /blog/importance-of-data-information-security-a-biggest-asset/ /blog/importance-of-data-information-security-a-biggest-asset/#comments Fri, 11 Jun 2021 08:09:00 +0000 /blog/?p=2744 Importance of Data/Information Security – A Biggest Asset

Data is ā€œRaw Facts and figuresā€ whereas Information is ā€œProcessed Dataā€. Data is the biggest asset for every organisation, hence its security is one of most important and aspect for them.

Security Metrics

Metrics are required to better understand your data.

Various Security Metrics are developed by security professionals to achieve the objective such as:

  • Risk Metrices
  • Security Vulnerability and incident statistics
  • Annual Loss Expectancy
  • Return on Investment
  • Total Cost of Ownership.

Although these metrices are accepted by various industries, still these metrices hold some disadvantages such as unreliable data processing. Industries are still looking for some good security metrices to fulfill their requirements.

Industries Experience

Industries like insurance, manufacturing and design teach us the importance of data and its security.

Insurance– Teaches us how important it is to collect, understand, and analyse data accurately and precisely, and their impact on our security metrics and other risk management exercises.

Manufacturing- Measurable and controlled processes always yield more positive results in terms of security.

Design- Successful measurement security programmes help to understand people as well as technology.[NS1] [72]

Challenges

Challenges involved with these metrics are:

  • Risk
  • Cost
  • Time
  • People
  • Measurement

Develop your own Metric

A successful metric programme will always look at how important the qualitative data is, security as a business process and the importance of people involved in the security process. Software Engineering teaches us the GQM (Global Question Metric Method) – one of the methods to develop our own metrices, it is a simple three-step process of developing a security metric. The first step is defining specific goals that the organisation expects to achieve. This will help the organisation to understand their business needs. The second step would be to convert the goals into well-formatted questions e.g. ā€œHow to achieve those goals?ā€ After that, the goal can begin at a data level and metrices can be assigned.

In conclusion, the better your metric programme, the better the outcomes will be.

Your Guide to Travelling in Singapore /blog/your-guide-to-travelling-in-singapore/ /blog/your-guide-to-travelling-in-singapore/#respond Tue, 18 May 2021 03:55:00 +0000 /blog/?p=2733 Hey! My name is Siti Nursyafiqah. I am currently undergoing a Bachelors’ Degree in Cybersecurity and Networks. While going through my academic journey here, I have realised that I really have atrocious navigation skills. I am sure many can relate to going out before or after classes. With the help of , my navigation skills have not only improved but, I am also able to reach my destinations on time as Citymapper is able to give an estimated time of arrival.

Citymapper is an application that includes transport options with ā€˜live’ timing between any 2 locations. It has an intuitive homescreen. There are various transport options included, like walking, driving and of course, public transports like buses and MRTs. Citymapper can be downloaded for free on the App Store and Google Play. Figure 1 would show how the application would look like when you open the app. It can even display current issues on public transports in addition to tweets from reputable sources like @SMRT_Singapore shown in Figure 2. You have easy access to a lot of important information with just one glance at the app.

Citymapper is an application that I personally feel is very easy to use. I am not very skilled in using maps and in addition, I tend to always be late. With Citymapper, I am able to plan my route ahead in time like which type of transport to take and how long the commute will be. It combines many applications together like knowing the arrival time of a bus from specific bus stops and the arrival time of trains from specific stations (Figure 2)

Citymapper even includes estimated prices when using public transport and calories lost if you cycle or walk to your destination shown in Figure 3. I especially enjoy walking and thus, Citymapper makes it easy to find my way as it provides specific instructions. The ā€˜live’ location dot is very sensitive and it is easy to find my way or realise that I am off the path (Figure 4). Pointers are given between directions making the journey even more simple to follow.

Hence, I encourage everyone to download this application that makes life so much easier to plan trips especially for people who are bad with navigation like me. I no longer have to call friends up and to tell them that I am lost!
