Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines. Driven by information and communication technology, AI creates a paradigm shift in numerous sectors of the tech industry and continues to evolve and reshape the economy. Three major AI trends are revolutionising the industry:

  • Creative or Generative AI. Generative AI refers to the machine learning generative data to produce new or existing outputs in various creative domains such as art, designing visuals, creating music, copywriting, etc. It has a wide range of applications that are helpful for students, schools and organisations at large. Here are 2 examples of OpenAI applications; and . Let’s check out some of these applications below.
  • Collaborative Robots or AI-human collaboration. Collaborative robots are also known as cobots, and they are coded to perform repetitive or strenuous tasks. Cobots are widely used in serving food dishes in the food and beverage restaurants, autonomous-driven Electric Vehicles in the car industry and the deployment of ā€˜security cobots’ in shopping malls or hospitals to replace security guards.
  • Ethics and regulation. There are many advantages of generative AI, but others worry about its abuse, such as the creation of false films. These tools can be used by cybercriminals to engage in fraud, defamation, blackmail, retaliation, etc., The distinction between original materials published and proprietary content also raises concerns in the media. The AI industry anticipates that consumers and customers will want openness, security, and ethical behaviour.

In Year 2021, an EU Act on AI was implemented to three risk categories. Firstly, it is not appropriate to employ programmes and systems that pose an intolerable danger, like a threat to a country. Secondly, there are special regulatory criteria that apply to high-risk applications, such as programmes that scan CVs and rate job candidates. Lastly, applications that are not indicated as high-risk are mainly uncontrolled.

enables creative outputs in domains like art and music. OpenAI’s applications, such as ChatGPT-4 and DALL.E2. exemplify its potential. Collaborative robots (Cobots) perform tasks alongside humans. However, ethical concerns arise, and regulations like the EU Act on AI address these risks. Balancing openness, security and ethics is crucial in AI development.

Five main challenges of Artificial Intelligent Technology /blog/five-main-challenges-of-artificial-intelligent-technology/ /blog/five-main-challenges-of-artificial-intelligent-technology/#respond Mon, 13 Dec 2021 03:01:44 +0000 /blog/?p=3270 The ever-presence of Artificial Intelligent (AI) in many industries, ranging from consumer applications to business intelligence, making AI one of the giant powerhouses driving productivity, growth and innovation in the near future. Even that AI has been growing over the past 60 years, there are still lots of challenges ahead. Some of these challenges need to be overcome to realize the full potential of AI.

Data Scarcity

The working of an AI system depends on trained data. Most people might not be knowing that obtaining quality data set require huge number of human hours to label the training data. On top of that, there must be sufficiently large and comprehensive data set to be used for the training purpose. The ability to obtain these quality data is detrimental in being graded as ā€œgoodā€ or ā€œbadā€ AI system in general. These would often be the challenges for the new applications or start-up companies.

Limited Implementation

Despite the progress in recent years, the implementation of AI is still restricted to specific problems. This highly specialized AI system is constructed just to perform one specific task and keep learning to improve its performance. The goal of building an AI system with much the same intelligence as human beings to tackle general problems is still a big challenge to researchers and practitioners.

Data Privacy and Security

The massive volume of data used to train the AI system is generated or collected from millions of users. There is the possibility that these are sensitive data. Due to this issue, AI systems can become prone to data breaches and identity theft. Creating a highly secure infrastructure to gather and store the data generated is paramount in tackling these challenges.

Transparency of Algorithm

If data is the food for AI system, algorithms are the brain of the system. AI systems, particularly machine learning, depending on algorithms to make the decision or prediction.  These machine learning algorithms tend to become more complex while striking to achieve the required accuracy. Hence, making them more and more difficult to be understood by human observers. Some of the machine learning algorithms, like deep learning, may have several layers of features and thousands of variables, literally making it a ā€œblack boxā€ that lack transparency. It becomes a challenge to anyone to explain the factors leading to a decision or prediction, and how.

Bias

Another big challenge with AI systems is that their level of ā€œgoodā€ or ā€œbadā€ depends on the data they are trained on and how the algorithms define what is ā€œgoodā€ or ā€œbadā€. Bad data is often associated with, ethnic, communal, gender or racial biases. With biased data and algorithms, the entire system could become flawed and lead to unethical and unfair results.

A Peek Into Dr Rama’s Life /blog/a-peek-into-dr-ramas-life/ /blog/a-peek-into-dr-ramas-life/#respond Thu, 14 Oct 2021 08:26:55 +0000 /blog/?p=3084 Take “A Peek Into” Dr Rama’s life, lecturer for the School of Engineering & Technology, and find out what interesting stories about campus she has to share.

What interests you in the field of technology?

According to me, Digital Technology should be a fundamental right of any citizen.

From young, I’ve always felt comfortable with Technology. I am from the era where technology just started in our regular life. Not everyone was comfortable with using technology.

I remember my first ā€œNokiaā€ mobile phone even though there was no Whatsapp, Facebook and internet on my mobile. But I was happy to have my personal phone with me, my mother was able to be in touch with me via mobile phone. Slowly when Technology improved, we had smartphones so it seemed like everything was in our pocket. I remember the first social networking website I used during my early 20s was ā€œOrkutā€.

On the other hand, there was news related to cyber threats such as phishing attacks, Dos attacks and more. From there I came to know about cyber-attacks, I read some articles related to cyber threats and saw how people were feeling scared with these threats. From there my interest in Ethical Hacking slowly improved. Many people think hackers are bad people. But it’s not true, there are different kinds of hackers. I am talking about ethical hackers/ white hat hackers, the good people. Ethical hacking teaches hacking together with ethics.

At what point in your life did you realise that teaching was your calling?

I love to teach others. In my childhood, I always taught my classmates and did the same in my university years. At home, I taught my elder brother and nowadays I teach my son. My mother was a teacher. She used to share her teaching stories and she wanted me to see a teacher. So I choose teaching as my career.

Any interesting stories on campus?

I joined 51±¬ĮĻ during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic teaches us many things including how to support each other especially with Burmist students as they needed mental support together with learning. Some of them share their scary stories which broke my heart. Also, I remember when I took a hybrid lesson, sometimes it was funny when I got up from my chair to answer a physical student’s query and the online students searched for me.

How important is cyber security with the increased presence of cloud storage nowadays?

Well, it is very important for cloud companies to work harder in cyber security as many of the companies are using cloud storage for their business. Any cyber-attack in the cloud is going to impact millions. Cloud service providers must make sure they have robust infrastructure, experienced and knowledgeable pen-testers as well as security analysts to deal with future cyber-attacks.

What do you do to destress?

I do yoga, listen to music, and sometimes also dance to my favourite songs.

A Peek Into Dr Tham’s Life /blog/a-peek-into-dr-thams-life/ /blog/a-peek-into-dr-thams-life/#respond Thu, 09 Sep 2021 07:17:32 +0000 /blog/?p=2970

Introducing a new series “A Peek Into” where we interview Head of Schools and Lecturers and understand what life is like for them on campus and beyond. Today, we’ll take A Peek Into Dr Tham’s Life as the Dean of 51±¬ĮĻ and also the Head of School for the School of Engineering & Technology.

What do you do as the Dean of 51±¬ĮĻ & the Head of School (HOS) for the School of Engineering & Technology (SET)?

As a Dean, I oversee all operational issues for all schools at 51±¬ĮĻ for both students and staff i.e. enrolment, discipline or misconduct, welfare, working and learning environment and others. As the HOS, I have been involved in student’s learning from the day a student enrolled into the programme till graduation and beyond. Students sometimes face difficulties and I try to solve them. For example, some students might have difficulty attending classes due to work commitments or personal issues. I have to ensure that lecturers are aware and we provide support to those students.

What first interests you in the field of Engineering?

It all started when I saw my neighbour playing with a yoyo. I’m not sure how old was I then. I was wondering how he made the yoyo swing back and forth while spinning. It was fascinating! I tried to figure out how it works and tried to modify my own yoyo by changing the string, even tried to put some light on it by dismantling it, but unfortunately failed and got scolded for breaking the yoyo.

What would the students be surprised to find out about you?

I am very playful with my friends. We did a lot of things during our university time that our lecturers have warned us to stop or risk not being able to attend lectures.

What are some of the challenges SET students face today?

With the advancement of technology, students face very stiff competition among their peers around the world. The information or knowledge that they learnt might be outdated when they graduate. Hence, students need to update themselves regularly so that they can stay in the know and be competitive.

Everything in excess is dangerous. Is artificial intelligence a threat or a blessing for today’s job?

It all depends on the purpose of the use of artificial intelligence. From my personal view, it is a blessing because it can help us to work more efficiently especially when working on routine work or tasks that do not involve decision making. Once decision making is done by artificial intelligence, we will be in deep trouble as it will only follow logic. However, we humans are born illogical.

QuickFire Questions

What do you do to destress?

A night of good sleep will help me to destress and refresh my mind.

What’s your Netflix/Disney + recommendations?

I am a big fan of animations or cartoons, especially lighthearted titles such as Ice Age, The Croods, Tom and Jerry, Kung Fu Panda and others. I watch them together with my children.

Artificial Intelligence (AI): What’s the Buzz? /blog/artificial-intelligence-ai-whats-the-buzz/ /blog/artificial-intelligence-ai-whats-the-buzz/#comments Fri, 17 May 2019 03:00:30 +0000 /blog/?p=1940 I’m a Student from 51±¬ĮĻ’ School of Technology currently undertaking an International Foundation Diploma in Information Technology. I chose this particular course because I believe in the importance of technology in our rapidly-evolving society. Pursuing this course and attaining the skills and knowledge about IT will therefore prove invaluable as I embark on this journey – which has thus far been a fairly smooth and interesting one, continuing to ignite my passion with IT!

Artificial Intelligence (AI): What’s the Buzz?

AI is basically a compilation of codes programmed to deal with specific tasks assigned by the programmer. AI has two aggregation types that mold modern technology, with widespread usage and huge impact to our daily course of living

Type 1: Narrow AI

Not entirely versatile and adaptable to its surroundings, these are used in drones and X-Ray devices which are designed for a singular purpose.

Type 2: General AI

Has the ability to learn from and adapt to its surroundings, and is the form of intelligence inherent to human beings. Within its initial code lies the ability to produce more elaborate codes that enable it to learn and put to use on-demand. The fundamental steps of coding general AI are called the neural networks, which are brain-inspired networks of interconnected layers of algorithms (neurons) able to relay data to each other and signify tasks to be performed via modifying priorities attributed to input data as it moves between the networks.

Even with its omnipotent-sounding nature, general AI is not without flaws. Nonetheless, its impact on Ā society will only increase as it continues to replace labor-intensive job functions amongst others. Public debate has even revolved around the possibility of AI gaining self-cognitive abilities and attaining self-personalities – leading to ā€œrobot rights movementā€ that could shake the very foundations of civilisation! Although still within the realm of science-fiction at the moment, such a possibility is very real.

To conclude

While AI will only be a boon to societal convenience, I do believe ethics will play an increasingly important role to the future of AI as it will re-shape how we normalise views concerning biological and artificial life. Via incorporating moral principles into AI development, we will be mindful not to transgress any natural laws in seeking universal goodwill.

Jordain signing off!

What is Machine Learning? /blog/what-is-machine-learning/ /blog/what-is-machine-learning/#respond Tue, 26 Jun 2018 01:25:46 +0000 /blog/?p=1707 Machine learning is defined as teaching a machine through experience by giving them sample data. The machine will then be able to perform prediction on data from what it understands. This is believed to be a subset of artificial intelligence. In recent years, Artificial intelligence and more specifically machine learning emerged as a proof of the fourth industrial revolution. Google, Facebook’s face tagging, Apple’s Siri assistant and Amazon product recommendation are some of the applications based on machine learning.

Simply, machine learning is an area of computer technology, which has the ability to self-study on input without specific programming.

Machine Learning Work Flow – Is all about data and its exploration.

  • Combine data from multiple sets and derive conclusion
  • Look for future trends from collected data
  • Make decision based on the data outcome
