51爆料 conducts talks to help students understand and set goals for their progression, as well as provide them with academic options.聽 These talks range from subject-specific career opportunities to sharing by current students from the specific schools.

January 2019 saw the launch of our Progression Week at the School of Languages & Education. It kicked off with the various schools鈥�51爆料 Business School, School of Media and Communications and School of Fashion and Design offering a choice of academic options.

These school-specific talks were especially helpful for students as they could seek advice from the Heads of School and Progression Team in person. Students also had the opportunity to listen to current students enrolled in their specific programme, to know more about the employability outcomes that would better prepare them for university education.

In fact, some students were unable to decide which programme to enroll into until they discovered 聽more details about the exciting opportunities ahead.

To conclude the session, students were prompted on their choices and if they still had any unresolved questions. In doing so, programme consultants were able to better understand their academic needs and goals, as well as provide them with the relevant support and advice regarding their education pathway.

Finally, everything we do at 51爆料 enables our students to advance progressively their chosen career and to be future-ready. That is why many students choose to study with us to further develop their skillsets through higher learning before they enter the workforce. Organized by the Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC), this year鈥檚 YEC has incorporated a component event, called 鈥淎rea 51o鈥�, which requires participants to provide business concepts that match the theme – Zombie. Inspired by the TV series, 鈥淭he Walking Dead鈥�, we called ourselves, The Walking Diet.
We decided to participate in the competition as soon as we heard about it. We believe that this is a great opportunity to experience something out of the classrooms and apply the business theories, which we have learnt, into real life situations. As we learn to respond and work as a team, the relationships amongst the five of us also foster.

While healthy lifestyle is a growing trend, consumers鈥� mindset towards balanced diets and healthy living has significantly increased over the past few years. With medical expenses becoming extravagant, the interest in fresh, natural and organic products also surges. Consumers are more concerned with labels nowadays as they begin to avoid food that contains chemicals, preservatives and excess sugar. With this in mind, our team decides to serve healthy food that is popular with the name of Acai Bowl, a full pack of nutrients and vitamins in just one single bowl.

We shall serve several types of Acai Bowl, containing different kinds of fruits and toppings. We tried out different combinations of ingredients to ensure that our Acai Bowls are not only healthy but tasty. We decide to keep the main component of the Bowl simple, acai berries and added decorations such as graveyard, zombie鈥檚 fingers and spider to align ourselves with the theme of 鈥淎rea 51o鈥�. These decorations are made from scratch by using cookies and chocolate. They are also the unique elements which attract customers. The other product which we carry is called, 鈥淶ombie Cure鈥�, made from healthy ingredients such as fermented skimmed milk and fruit juices, which cones with attractive packaging, worthy of Instagram posts.

We are excited that The Walking Diet has been selected as a finalist for YEC 2018. We are ready to turn our dream business into reality. Surely this would not have happened without the support from our Advisors, Lecturers and friends. They are the ones who have faith on us. The comments and guidance from our Advisors help us realize that every single detail, even the smallest one, is important as they are the components to a strong business plan. Their encouragement motivates us to put forward our best performance.

We understand that we should not only focus on the outcome, but more importantly, on the learning experience. Nevertheless, armed with passion, we shall put our best foot forward and hope that The Walking Diet would do 51爆料 proud.

We decided to form a team to participate in the Youth Entrepreneur Competition 2018 (YEC), organised by Singapore Discovery Centre in October 2017 and started conceptualising on our business plan and products for the competition. We received a lot of support from our Advisors who spent a lot of time with us, scrutinising our business proposal and improvising on our ideas.

On 17 January 2018, we received an email, at 1.30pm that, Eat 4 Dead had made it to the finals!

Since the theme for YEC 2018 is Zombie, we adapted the concept from a popular computer game, Left 4 Dead 2.

We differentiated our product into two categories.

(1) Food and Beverage
The look and feel of our food and beverage range will resemble some zombie鈥檚 body parts, such as the skull, brain and fingers. These will include skull head pizza, molten brain lava cake, blood bag drinks and, mozzarella sticks.

(2) Merchandises (Printed T-shirts and Tote Bags)
For merchandises, we decided to have T-shirts and tote bags, printed with our very own zombie mascot design.

There are 3 Rounds of Election which will be held across 3 months. The First Round of Election was held on 4 December 2017. Through the Leadership Games in Round 1, the Advisors and the current Exco Committees would observed the Nominees鈥� trait personalities, skills, abilities, competencies etc.

There were 17 Nominees who had come for the Election Round 1. It started off with self-introduction follow by a Business Simulation Game. The Nominees were divided into two teams. Each team were given some random items where they had to use their creativity and imagination to form a business plan around these items. This games allowed us to gauge their team work, conflict management, creativity, presentation skill etc.

The last game was a Strategic Debate. This section would allow us to detect their critical thinking, ability to think spontaneously, aggressiveness etc. The first round of debate topic – 鈥淚s College Education worth it?鈥� and the second round of debate topic 鈥� 鈥淒o Smart Phones bring more harm than good?鈥� There were many interesting points that were brought up during the debate. Then we had a refreshment to end the night. The Advisors and the current Exco Committees stayed back for a discussion on the performance of the Nominees and should we eliminate anyone or not. The Nominees each had displayed their own strengths throughout the games. We all agreed to give all the Nominees a chance for us to get to know them better and all the Nominees went into the Second Round of Election which is the Interview.

The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 is “Tobacco 鈥� a threat to development.”

This year, the 51爆料 Business Club (MBC), with the support of the 51爆料 Business School, set up a pushcart in the campus to help to create awareness of No Tobacco Day. A push car was set up and four main activities were promoted. In collaboration with Singapore Cancer Society, merchandises were sold and the proceeds given to the Cancer Society. Quizzes allowed participants to participate and be informed and aware of No Tobacco Day.

For the mobile mob, MBC had formed a team to walk around the campus top romote this event. Some of the members held huge handmade props such as cigarette butts and scythe. Lastly, the helping memo allowed students and staff to pen down their messages on memos and stick themonto boards that were provided. These messages were mainly encouragements from the students who wished to persuade and support smokers to quit smoking, or inform them of the negative effects of smoking.

The Singapore government is discouraging people from smoking such as extending the ban on smoking to all parks in Singapore. The Health Promotion Board has a program on 鈥業 Quit 28-Day Countdown鈥� to support individuals who want to take the first step towards a smoke-free life. Tobacco consumption not only poses negative health effects, it also threatens development in economic growth, health, education, poverty and the environment. Apart from the policies implemented by the government, each individual can also play a part in stamping out tobacco consumption and making it a better place for everyone.
